This course provides an detailed overview of the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) program, focusing on its structure, evaluation procedures, and relevance for forensic toxicologists. Learners explore the 12-step DRE evaluation process, including eye examinations, divided attention tests, vital sign assessments, and toxicological specimen collection. The course examines the program’s historical development, scientific validation through key studies, and the criteria for DRE certification. Emphasis is placed on the strengths and limitations of DRE assessments and the importance of collaboration between DREs, toxicologists, and prosecutors to improve impaired driving investigations and public safety outcomes.
