Postmortem Redistribution of Drugs

Course Description:
This course provides an in-depth examination of postmortem redistribution (PMR) and its impact on the interpretation of drug concentrations in forensic toxicology. Participants will explore the mechanisms driving PMR, including physicochemical drug properties, anatomical factors, and postmortem physiological changes. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing central and peripheral blood concentrations, understanding tissue-to-blood ratios, and recognizing drugs most susceptible to redistribution. Through case studies and current literature, the course highlights real world challenges in interpreting toxicological findings in death investigations. Participants will develop critical skills for evaluating postmortem drug data, minimizing misinterpretation, and effectively communicating findings in medicolegal contexts.
