Recommendations for Toxicological Investigation of Drug-Impaired Driving Cases

Course Description:
This course reviews the development and evolution of recommendations for toxicological testing in drug-impaired driving (DUID) investigations. It explains how surveys of forensic laboratories informed national guidance on analytical scope, screening and confirmation methods, and reporting practices. Learners examine updates from 2007 through 2021, including the introduction of tiered drug lists, changes in cutoff concentrations, and shifts in laboratory technology. The course also discusses specimen types, trends in frequently detected drugs, laboratory compliance, and ongoing efforts to standardize DUID testing practices.
