Contributor questions, answered
How do I record content?
Most content is recorded with PowerPoint's built-in recording tools. You can narrate one slide at a time, in sections, or in a single take, and PowerPoint keeps each slide's audio attached to the slide — so you can edit narration, graphics, or slide order later without re-recording. We provide a short instructional video that walks through recording in PowerPoint.
What types of content does DrugImpairment.com need?
We publish in two places:
- e-Learning courses — usually 60 minutes or more, built from individual lessons, with a certificate of completion for CEU credit. Shorter lessons can be combined with others on a similar topic, even from different instructors.
- Expert Insights — our free hub for shorter pieces. You can contribute a microlearning topic (a short, focused piece on a single drug-impairment subject) or a case study (walking through a case step by step, noting the considerations at each stage before revealing the conclusions). Either can be recorded as a video or written as an article.
Other well-structured teaching formats are welcome.
What are the elements of an e-learning course?
A course must include video-based instruction (you don't have to appear on camera), an instructor introduction, disclosures (included even when there are none to declare), learning objectives (generally two to four per hour), and lessons — each a separate section with its own video; we handle splitting your content into separate videos.
A course may also include instructor contact information, written materials, downloadable attachments such as the slides, external links, quizzes or tests, and a bibliography. Content must not include copyrighted material or others' intellectual property without permission, identifiable images of people without a signed likeness waiver, or product or service recommendations unless covered by a disclosed sponsorship agreement.
What do I need to get started?
A computer with a good-quality microphone or headset (we can loan a microphone if needed), a recent version of PowerPoint, and about five minutes to watch our recording video. If it helps, we can also provide access to licensed-graphics resources such as Canva Pro and Adobe Stock.
How can I get compensated for contributing?
Compensation depends on your situation, and arrangements may combine more than one of the models below:
- Within your existing job — because we don't charge for individual courses, many instructors create content within the scope of their employment, much like presenting at a conference. We're glad to provide a complimentary membership, and for ongoing contributors we may be able to support training or conference scholarships, or additional memberships for their organization.
- Outside your job, when your employer prohibits paid outside work — we offer a free membership and other incentives allowed under your employer's terms.
- As a paid independent contractor — this can include pay per hour of delivered content, a membership, service referrals for those with consulting or expert-witness practices, and co-branding or marketing arrangements for those with a private business.
- Ambassador Program — a small number of Ambassador positions are available for contributors who produce content regularly, help recruit other contributors, and raise awareness of the platform. Ambassadors can earn residual income tied to the growth their efforts generate.
